Does photography has a role in society? Is possible to change the world with photography?
Photography is powerful. In the right hands, it can be a weapon to move society, to show problems, to ask for solutions.
Consider the work of Salgado, for example. He's showing us where poverty is, how it is to live in a poor country, or in a place where war, injustice and fights take the population to terrible ways of life.
Is not just showing us some photos. The amazing thing is that he's producing great photos. Light, composition, prospective. The photo in his books are exceptional.
But what's the purpose of an "amazing photo with a terrible topic"?
Well, bad photos don't go in expositions, museums, books. They are not spread.
His photos go around the world and show everybody problems that people would never consider otherwise.
That's the photographer power. Produce something with a scope.
A photographer can show how much waste there is the ocean, or how global warming is changing the world. Everybody can make a photo, but a photographer can take a photo to the next level and shock the world.
I also like Christoph Fischer's point of view which says that "Evocative images which portray the beauty of our natural world make the viewer realize how precious it is, that it needs to be protected." Inspire the world and preserve it.
Many other photographers instead use their art to combat stereotypes. Often a society can appear different from what it really is, so it takes a great deal of attention and open-mindedness to overturn the negative ideas born from incorrect information. Which is your role?
